The Provincial Meteorological Center of Artemisa reported on a tornado that occurred in the coastal town of Playa Baracoa causing rain, thunderstorms and strong winds.

The meteorological event was recorded on the afternoon of this Thursday and according to the note of the state organization shared in the profile of the Government of that province, it carried out “a tour from the Héroes de Cangamba primary school to the town of La Loma, covering a approximate distance of one and a half kilometers.”

During this journey, the tornado caused damage to power lines, partial collapses of roofs of homes in the town of La Loma, and downed trees.

The Provincial Meteorological Center added that “due to the damage caused and the short duration of the phenomenon, it is classified as EF0 with winds between 125 and 137 km/h, according to the Improved Fujita scale.”

Finally, the note indicated that “the meteorological situation was due to the strong diurnal warming, the high relative humidity content and the local instability conditions, as well as the presence of an upper trough located in the Gulf of Mexico.”

Several images published on the Facebook profile of the state journalist Cuscó Tarradell show the destruction caused by the phenomenon, mainly in homes.

“In the photos, taken by several residents and uploaded to social networks, you can see the effects of the devastating event. What misfortune for these residents of the Bauta municipality, SURPRISED! So far no human losses have been reported,” he wrote in his Tarradel publication.

In addition, he added that the tornado “lasted approximately 20 minutes.”

Other Internet users have also shared photos of the event, stating that “everything happened so quickly that the residents were perplexed.”

Although the damage is not comparable, some users remember the terrible tornado that hit Havana on the night of January 27, 2019, described as an “unusually violent and destructive” event.

The event was categorized as an EF3-EF4 and according to data from the Cuban Institute of Meteorology, the travel speed was approximately 42 km/h, it covered an area 11 km long and with an average width of approximately 700 m. The estimated winds are between 232 and 320 km/h.

Regarding the damage, the island’s government reported the death of four people and more than 190 injuries. In addition, damage was reported to nearly 3,000 homes, of which more than 300 completely collapsed.
