## Greece Hit⁢ by Wildfires, Thick Smoke ⁤Blankets⁣ Athens

(ANSA) – ATHENS, AUGUST 11 – Greece was ⁣struck by several ‍wildfires on Monday,‍ leaving thick smoke⁢ and haze to blanket parts of the capital Athens. As warnings escalated over impending extreme weather, officials expressed concern for the ‌safety of half the ​country, which was categorized as high​ risk for wildfires due to soaring temperatures, strong winds, and prolonged drought.

In the eastern ⁢Attica region, a blaze erupted in the town of Varnavas, consuming areas with scattered homes. The intense smoke ⁢cast such a red glow over Athens​ that⁢ the ⁤sky was illuminated in⁤ a reddish hue. Emergency responders ⁢deployed a team of 165 firefighters, 30 vehicles, seven ⁢firefighting planes, ⁣and ‌five helicopters to combat the​ blaze. Evacuation orders were issued for residents of Varnavas.

Another fire broke out in Megara, western Attica, prompting an evacuation alert. A ⁣force of 48 firefighters, supported by 13 ​vehicles ⁢and⁢ volunteers, worked to​ contain the fire.​ Two planes and two helicopters were also ‌dispatched for assistance. In the Thessaloniki area, a fire ⁣in the town of Lagadas ‍was partially extinguished, with 20 firefighters, 10 vehicles, and a helicopter responding to the scene.
