Norrland Coastal Region Braces for Heavy Snowfall and Strong Winds

Meteorologist Linus Karlsson at SMHI has issued a warning for the Norrland coastal region, specifically between Söderhamn and Sundsvall, as it is expected to receive the greatest amounts of snow and wind. According to Karlsson, the region has already experienced strong winds, with gusts measuring up to 20.8 meters per second at Kuggören, east of Hudiksvall. In the nearby villages, the wind speeds reached 17 meters per second early in the morning.

However, Karlsson assures that during the day, the wind will turn north and gradually subside. The region has also experienced heavy snowfall during the night, with Gävleborg receiving between half and a decimetre of snow. The town of Edsbyn has seen the largest amount of snow so far, with just over a decimetre. Karlsson predicts that the snowfall will continue throughout the day, with a few more decimetres expected.

Unfortunately, the severe weather conditions have caused traffic problems in the area. Karlsson advises those who need to travel to be prepared for difficult conditions and potential power outages. In fact, a truck driving south of the Högakusten Bridge in the morning veered off the E4 and its trailer is currently blocking the road in the southbound direction. As a result, traffic is being diverted to road 723 until 10 o’clock, according to Felicia Danielsson at the Swedish Transport Administration.

SMHI has issued an orange warning for the coastal region and a yellow warning for southern and central Jämtland County. Another yellow warning applies to the Västerbotten coast, between Umeå and Skellefteå. Karlsson states that while the snowfall is gradually slowing down, it will continue to affect Ångermanland and the coastal region of Västerbotten during the late evening and night.

Residents and travelers in the affected areas are advised to exercise caution and stay updated with the latest weather alerts.
