Students of the Law school of the UNAM They marched deceived against the reform al judiciary.

This is what President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said in his morning press conference this Thursday.

On his own initiative, the outgoing president referred to the mobilization of students from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in favor of the Judiciary:

“There are youth demonstrations, yesterday was the Law School demonstration -at UNAM- (…) they have teachers who are surely telling them that it is unfair, illegal (…) they are being deceived.”

And as an example he mentioned the retired minister, Diego Valadés, who is part of the Institute of Legal Research of the UNAM, of whom he said that:

“He was Salinas’ attorney (…) they appointed him ‘democratically’ in May -1994- (…) and when Zedillo came in, he liquidated the ministers of the Court, and this minister who had just come in, and since then, for 30 years (…) that minister earning around 250 thousand pesos a month, around 70 million pesos, plus what he receives as an emeritus teacher.”

At the same time, he took the opportunity to lament “how my Alma Mater was destroyed” by politicians during the neoliberal period, because the president has said for 3 years that UNAM has “gone to the right,” and he even challenged its members to go out and march against it.

Yesterday, hundreds of students from the UNAM Faculty of Law marched from the school’s headquarters in Ciudad Universitaria to the headquarters of the Federal Judicial Council in Insurgentes Sur, to support the judiciary and reject the proposed reform of said power.

As part of yesterday’s mobilization, Professor Angélica Manríquez read a statement from the Faculty, which states that:

“We can no longer remain silent against the reform that threatens the judiciary, that seeks to eliminate constitutional checks and balances, that does not look out for the most unprotected, but rather seeks to maintain more power.”
