Students occupied the Zorrilla High School: There will be a meeting with secondary authorities on Monday

Last Thursday, the Zorrilla High School, located on Bulevar España and Requena, was taken over by students, who demanded an audience with the director of Secondary Education, Jenifer Cherroand the president of the Central Board of Directors of the National Administration of Public Education (CODICEN of ANEP), Robert Silva.

In response to this situation, the Ministry of Interior police officers were deployed with the aim of evicting the students from the educational center. However, the students remained firm in their decision and did not agree to leave the place.

Inside the high school, there were Zorrilla students, while on the outskirts a cordon of representatives from various educational centers was formed who came to support in solidarity. The police officers tried to speak on three occasions with the student spokespersons, but they maintained their position and requested that inspector Catalina Videla draft a report..

The demands of the students were variedranging from the request for 6% of the budget, better infrastructure conditions, accessibility, to greater participation in decision-making.

Support from the Broad Front and riot police

The Broad Front deputies, Lucía Etcheverry and Micaela Melgar, appeared at the scene to mediate between the students and the police, seeking a peaceful solution to the conflict. A few minutes before 2:00 p.m., a police cordon in front of the Zorrilla High School, with members of the anti-riot squads. At that moment, the advisor of the ANEP, Julián Mazzoni, made an appearance.

The tension was palpable, with the students maintaining their firm stance and the police persisting in their request for eviction. However, at 2:35 p.m., the students, forming a human chain, began to leave the high school. They were escorted by those who remained outside and headed towards Bulevar España, chanting slogans against the educational authorities and asking for greater funding. In this way, the students put an end to the occupation of the Zorrilla High School.

It was agreed that a meeting with Secondary Education authorities will be held next Monday to address concerns raised by students.
