Second-year ESO students from IES Plaza de la Cruz and first-year ESO students from IES Barañáin have won first prizes in the writing and artistic categories, respectively, in the ‘Un mar de ciencia’ contest at the Public University of Navarra (UPNA), recently held at the institution.

This is an outreach contest framed in the commemoration of World Oceans Day within the G9 Missions project of Group 9 of Universities, whose objective is to reflect on the importance of conserving the oceans, seas, rivers and groundwater.

In addition to the aforementioned centers, second prizes have also been awarded to second-year ESO students from the IES Ribera del Arga (Peralta) and from the IES Torre Basoko in Pamplona (writing and artistic categories, respectively) and a third prize for students from the IES Plaza de la Cruz, a group of the second year of ESO for each of the writing and artistic modalities. All the awards and distinguished works in each of the modalities can be consulted on the University website.

The prizes consisted of carrying out the ‘Agentes Agua’ workshops for the two winning centers in each modality, and a series of guided tours at the Public University of Navarra to get to know their laboratories and research institutes for the rest, as well as the delivery of a pack of material for all.

‘G9 Missions. Go for the Missions!’ is the name given to the institutions that make up Group 9 of Universities, coordinated by the University of Cantabria, to jointly celebrate the European Night of Researchers in 2022 and 2023. The activities of the consortium, made up of the universities of Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Islas Baleares, Oviedo, País Vasco, Pública de Navarra and Zaragoza, with the collaboration of the University of La Rioja, are available on the event’s website. This project is funded by the European Union within the Horizon Europe program: Framework Program for Research and Innovation.

The G9 Missions consortium supports the celebration of World Oceans Day, whose motto this year is ‘Ocean planet: the currents are changing’, with the aim of communicating and disseminating the impact of human beings on the ocean, valuing research on universities in this area and raise awareness in society about the necessary sustainable management of the seas. Within the framework of this celebration, the joint activity ‘A sea of science’ took place, designed by the University of the Balearic Islands and the University of the Basque Country.
