Studio Ghibli Secures Long-Term Future with Acquisition by Nippon TV

by time news

Studio Ghibli secures its long-term future with a recent deal that will ensure the continuation of the renowned Japanese animation studio founded by Hayao Miyazaki almost four decades ago. The acquisition of Studio Ghibli by private broadcaster Nippon TV comes after concerns arose about the studio’s struggle to find a successor.

Hayao Miyazaki, considered one of the world’s greatest animators, established Studio Ghibli in 1985 and led it to numerous successes, including winning an Oscar in 2003 for Spirited Away. Films like My Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke garnered a loyal global following, further establishing Studio Ghibli’s reputation.

Despite Miyazaki’s son, Goro, being mentioned as a potential successor, he firmly rejected the idea, prompting the studio to explore other options for the future. In a joint statement, Studio Ghibli expressed their struggle to find a successor and their decision to leave the reins to someone else.

Nippon TV, already an important financial supporter of Ghibli films since 1985, has agreed to acquire Studio Ghibli, becoming its largest shareholder. The broadcaster pledged to respect the studio’s autonomy and will obtain 42.3% of voting rights, making Studio Ghibli its subsidiary. The financial details of the acquisition remain undisclosed.

Nippon TV’s involvement in Studio Ghibli stretches back to its role in televising Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind in 1985 and contributing to the establishment of the Ghibli Museum in 2001. The acquisition solidifies their longstanding relationship and ensures the studio’s continued success.

Hayao Miyazaki, who previously announced his retirement after The Wind Rises in 2013 due to his age, surprised fans by returning to create what is said to be his final film. Titled Kimitachi wa Do Ikiru ka? (How Do You Live?), the film was released in Japan in July and is set to premiere in the US as The Boy and the Heron in December.

With this acquisition, Studio Ghibli is set to embark on a new chapter, secure in the knowledge that its legacy will be preserved and its creativity will continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
