Following its world premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival, Luca Guadagnino’s drama Artificial is heading into the 2027 awards season with a strategic push from studio Neon for its lead and supporting cast members.
Described on the festival website as a drama of immense moral urgency, the project guides audiences through two decades of machine learning research and technocratic recklessness that culminated in the current artificial intelligence crisis.

Studio Positions Yura Borisov for Best Actor Oscar
Studio Neon has finalized its awards season strategy, positioning Russian actor Yura Borisov for consideration in the Best Actor category for his portrayal of OpenAI co-founder and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever.
Andrew Garfield, who stars as OpenAI head Sam Altman, will be submitted in the Best Supporting Actor category alongside Mark Rylance, who appears as AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton. Monica Barbaro, who portrays former OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati, will compete in the Best Supporting Actress category. The upcoming campaign covers all major categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. Additional cast members appearing in the film include Cooper Hoffman and Ike Barinholtz, who takes on the role of Elon Musk.
Film Examines OpenAI Executive Conflict
The film’s plot mainly focuses on the period when Altman was fired and then reinstated at OpenAI. Altman was fired in November 2023, and OpenAI stated at the time that he would leave the positions of CEO and board member because he was not always candid in his interactions
with board members. That decision prompted a wave of resignations, including the departure of three senior researchers, while nearly all employees threatened to walk out and join Microsoft unless Altman was reinstated. Reports from outlets like the Wall Street Journal indicated that Sutskever orchestrated the departure due to disagreements over artificial intelligence safety protocols. Altman was reinstated as CEO less than a week later, and he returned to the board of directors in March 2024. Sutskever subsequently resigned from OpenAI in May 2024 to launch his startup, Safe Superintelligence.
The film’s path to release involved multiple studio changes. Amazon MGM Studios originally planned to distribute the project, but the company announced in June that it would be better served by a different release partner, with industry reports noting the move may have stemmed from the film’s negative portrayal of Altman. Following passes from A24, Netflix, Focus Features, and Warner Bros., Neon acquired the rights during the summer.
