Al-Marsad Newspaper: Recent medical research has revealed a relationship between high cholesterol medications or those used to control type 2 diabetes, and the chances of developing degenerative eye diseases associated with ageing.

The study, whose results were published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, stated that the study, which was supervised by the European Union of Ophthalmology, confirmed a close link between high cholesterol drugs or those used to control type 2 diabetes, and a decrease in the chances of developing age-related macular degeneration.

The recent study reached its results after reviewing 14 studies involving 9,332 people from all over Europe, in which a large number of data were evaluated.

All participants in the assessment were over 50 years old and taking at least one of the following medications: cholesterol-lowering statins, diabetes-control drugs including insulin, anti-inflammatory drugs excluding steroids, and levodopa, which treats movement disorders caused by disease. neurodegenerative;

The results showed that medications used to lower cholesterol or control diabetes were associated with a decrease in the prevalence of any type of degenerative eye disease, by 15 and 22 percent, respectively.

“More data is needed to confirm our findings so that more focus is placed on discovering the causal factor, and the potential interference of these drugs with pathophysiological pathways,” the study’s authors said in a press release.
