New Study Challenges Prejudices about Mouth and Throat Cancer
A recent study conducted by the Leipzig University Medical Center has shed new light on the prevalent misconceptions surrounding mouth and throat cancer. Contradicting assumptions that excessive sexual activity and multiple partners are the main causes of these types of cancer, the study reveals that the actual culprit is the human papillomavirus (HPV).
According to a report by the “Salzburger Nachrichten,” the study found that the sex lives of patients with oropharyngeal cancer, a type of mouth and throat cancer, did not significantly differ from those of healthy individuals. Instead, the presence of HPV was identified as the leading cause of these cancers.
HPV is a common virus that can infect the skin and mucous membranes, potentially leading to the development of precancerous lesions or cancer. In Germany, it has been determined that approximately one-third of mouth and throat tumors are caused by HPV.
While the study reinforced previously identified risk factors such as tobacco smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, it emphasized the importance of HPV prevention. In Germany, vaccinations against specific types of HPV are available for both girls and boys from the age of nine.
The findings of this study highlight the need to educate the public about the actual causes of mouth and throat cancers and dispel the prevailing misconceptions.
