A recent study conducted in the United States revealed that 40 percent of cancer cases and nearly half of deaths resulting from this disease are due to risks that patients take by their own choice.
According to a study conducted by the American Cancer Society, smoking, being overweight, consuming alcohol, not exercising, certain foods and meals, and exposure to ultraviolet rays are all factors that increase the risk of cancer and are exposed to it by choice.
Researchers examined national health databases in the United States, particularly among cancer patients, and found that smoking is the main factor causing this disease by a large margin, as the percentage of those infected with this disease among smokers reaches 20 percent.
“Despite the significant decline in the number of smokers, the number of lung cancer cases in the United States linked to cigarette smoking is worrying,” members of the study team said in statements reported by the Health Day website, which specializes in medical research.
The study showed that obesity and overweight are linked to about 8 percent of cancer cases, followed by alcohol consumption at 5 percent, then exposure to ultraviolet rays and lack of exercise.
When examining different types of cancer, researchers found that 100 percent of cervical cancer, 90 percent of lung cancer, and 80 percent of skin cancer are caused by factors that people can avoid by changing their lifestyle.
The researchers stressed that “these results highlight the need to increase attention to health care and enhance awareness efforts about precautionary measures that can be used to reduce the chances of developing cancer.”
They added that these measures include receiving certain types of vaccines to prevent infection with hepatitis B type 2, which causes liver cancer, and infection with the human papillomavirus, which causes many types of cancer.
