Study Finds Virtual Reality Therapy Effective for Stroke Patients with Cognitive Deficits

A recent study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research: Serious Games has examined the effectiveness of living brain’s therapy application called teora® mind. teora® mind is a cognitive training application that utilizes virtual reality (VR) technology. The software allows users to practice cognitive skills such as memory, attention, and problem-solving by wearing VR glasses and engaging with the teora® mind software.

Unlike traditional therapy methods, teora® mind focuses on providing realistic scenarios to users. Activities of daily living (ADL), which are problems encountered in everyday life, such as making coffee, are gamified and trained in virtual reality. The application has already been certified as a medical product and is being used in some clinics, particularly for post-stroke treatment.

To assess the effectiveness of teora® mind, the study compared it to current standard treatment, which involves abstract exercises carried out on a computer. Examples of these exercises include identifying fish with pearls or arranging the steps to build a snowman in the correct order.

The study was conducted at the Asklepios Neurological Clinic in Falkenstein and involved 42 stroke patients. These patients received an average of 18.7 treatment units lasting 30-45 minutes each over several weeks. The research found that the VR group showed significant improvement in planning and problem-solving abilities, while no improvements were observed in the standard therapy control group. Notably, both groups started at the same baseline level.

Importantly, no serious side effects were observed during the study, and both patients and practitioners highly appreciated the treatment.

Julian Specht, living brain’s Chief Science Officer, expressed their satisfaction with the results, stating, “The results suggest that immersive VR neurotherapy with teora® mind is a safe and effective treatment option for patients with cognitive deficits after stroke. The successful implementation of the study and the published results make us proud as a whole company. Scientific work has always been a fundamental part of our DNA since our establishment. We will continue to optimize our product and validate it for new clinical applications, with further studies already being planned.”
