We all know that multivitamins are not a panacea – although vitamin C is very good for your skin. But they can certainly act as a “diet insurance plan” – certainly to fill in the “holes” of your eating habits. Particularly if you have certain food allergies, dietary restrictions, or medical conditions that affect how and what you eat, taking a multivitamin can be crucial for people who are chronically deficient in key nutrients. But this popular supplement can do more than just that. A new study has shown that daily use of multivitamins may play a role in improving memory. We tell you more about it.

The multivitamin study

The research, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, looked at data from more than 3,500 older adults ages 60 and older. The researchers randomly assigned the participants either a daily multivitamin supplement or a placebo. The participants were evaluated annually for three years with a series of online neuropsychological tests, but the study participants and the researchers did not know what type of pills the participants were receiving.

At the end of the first year, those taking the multivitamin had significantly better scores on a test that assessed immediate memory than the placebo group. This was also apparent after three years follow-up. But interestingly, improvements were also seen in people with heart disease.

At the start of the study, participants with a history of heart disease scored lower on memory tests than participants without heart disease. But after just one year of daily multivitamin use, people with a history of heart disease saw significant improvements in memory compared to people without heart disease.

And this isn’t the first time multivitamin use has been linked to improved cognitive function. The results of another NIH-backed study, published in 2022, showed that daily use of multivitamins improved cognitive function in older adults ages 65 and older. Improvements were also more apparent in participants with a history of heart disease.

What does a multivitamin do for your body?

Multivitamins are a type of supplement that usually contain a combination of vitamins and minerals, and sometimes other added functional ingredients. Brands are allowed to decide for themselves how many and which types of vitamins, minerals and other ingredients they put in their multivitamin product. But in general, most multivitamins contain all or most of the vitamins and minerals in amounts close to what is recommended.

They are not designed to take the place of eating a variety of nutritious foods – this is because whole foods provide a package of vitamins, minerals, fiber and other beneficial components to support overall health. But even the healthiest diets loaded with tons of fruits and veggies may need supplementation of certain vitamins and minerals. You just have to know.
