According to a US-based study, India is the eighth most likely country to commit lynching in the world in 2022-23. The study also says that India was at the second position at the beginning of the year. “There is a 7.4 percent chance of a massacre in India during 2022-2023,” said the Early Warning Project, which identifies countries prone to mob violence, in a report released in November.

The Simon-Skjod Center for the Prevention of Genocide at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth College conducted a joint study of the worsening situation in India.

Almost all cases of genocide involve mass killings. The study analyzed 162 countries. In this year, Pakistan ranked first in the list, followed by Yemen at second, Myanmar at third, Ethiopia at fifth, Nigeria at sixth and Afghanistan at seventh. The figures are Sudan (nine), Somalia (10), Syria (11), Iraq (12) and Zimbabwe (14). One of the metrics that ranks countries is freedom of movement for men.

Other parameters used for analysis are geographical area and population. Socioeconomic measures, governance measures, levels of human rights (freedom of movement), and records of violent conflict (war-related deaths, ongoing massacres) are also measures.

The study also highlights several incidents of violence against Muslims under the current Indian government. “Extremist Hindu nationalist leaders continue to spread hate speech, including calls for religious leaders to massacre Muslims in December 2021. Recent months have seen large-scale violence targeting Muslims in several states. Muslim places of worship and mosques have been desecrated. Properties owned by protesting Muslims have been bulldozed,” the report added. .
