Study to set up wind farm and solar power plant in one place Dinamalar

Chennai: Various companies have set up wind power plants with a capacity of 8,684 MW in Tamil Nadu. Out of which the share of Power Board is only 19 MW. That is, 1.15 MW in Tuticorin Mullakkad; 10.30 MW in Gayathar; 1.59 MW at Puliankulam, Madurai; 0.09 MW in Sultanpet, Coimbatore; 4.22 MW in Kanyakumari Muppandal; Tirupur Kedanur has 2 mega watt wind farms.

The above power stations were constructed between 1986 and 1993. Therefore, the power board has decided to replace the wind farms set up several years ago and set up new wind and solar power plants with higher capacity at the same location.

Regarding the technology of setting them up, research is being done through the Central Government’s National Wind Power Corporation.

A power board official said: The power board’s 120 wind turbines have a combined power generation capacity of 19 megawatts. At present, a single wind turbine is capable of generating 4 – 5 megawatts. There are many acres of vacant land where old windmills stand. Wind and solar power plants are to be set up in those places to replace the old wind farms.

Together, the two are slated to produce 80 megawatts. Thus, solar power is available during the day and wind power at other times.

The feasibility of this is being explored through the National Wind Power Agency in terms of technologies. Once the inspection report is received, the construction of power stations will be started.

This is what he said.
