The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) through the General Hospital of Macas, provides comprehensive care to premature newborns from the 12 cantons of the province of Morona Santiago in the Neonatology Unit. Last October a premature twin delivery was performed successfully.

A 38-year-old patient with a twin pregnancy required immediate attention, two girls were born, one with an adequate weight, however, the second had a low weight and presented signs of respiratory distress, who is recovering satisfactorily.

The neonatology unit has the necessary equipment to adequately treat children with these symptoms. The newborn remained hospitalized for five days in this space where the kangaroo breast method was applied, a therapy through which the skin-to-skin attachment of the mother and her daughter is maintained. This initiative strengthens the heart rate, temperature and the integral evolution of newborns.

Mónica Lucero, mother of the twins, expressed her satisfaction. “I am very grateful to the pediatrician and to the doctors for all the attention, I was hospitalized 21 days before giving birth to my daughters.”

Currently, the newborns are out of danger and constant monitoring will be carried out through monthly check-ups. The dedication of their mother has been essential, since she has provided enough breast milk to the twins, which guarantees that their development and growth is excellent.

In the General Hospital of Macas so far in 2023, 496 admissions have been registered with joint accommodation in the neonatology area, cases from the entire province and even from Zamora and Puyo.
