The Korea Craft & Design Foundation (President Jang Dong-kwang, hereinafter referred to as the Foundation) announced that the ‘2024 Korean Food Culture Promotion Campaign (Campagne de Promotion de la K-Food Culture 2024)’ held in Paris, the venue for the 2024 Summer Olympics, together with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister Yoo In-chon, hereinafter referred to as MCST) in August, has successfully concluded.

The Gongjinwon Korean Food Culture Promotion Campaign, now in its fourth year, has been promoting the charm of Korean food and traditional culture to the world in major cultural centers around the world, such as Milan, New York, and Jakarta. This year, following the event in Sydney, Australia in April, an event themed on traditional Korean table settings, “Soban and Juan-sang,” was held in Paris, France during the Olympics. Through the “Korean Food Culture Event – ÉVÉNEMENTS CULTURELSHANSI” and “Korean Food Culture Class – Journée de Cours HANSIK” programs, the charm of Korean food and the value of traditional culture were introduced not only to Parisians but also to people from around the world visiting for the Olympics.

The ‘Korean Food Culture Event’, held for three days from August 2nd to 4th, showcased diverse Korean food and traditional culture to around 10,000 citizens in the 15th arrondissement square (Mairie du 15ᵉ arrondissement de Paris), the largest shopping district in Paris where local street cheering was held. They sat on benches set up in a Hanok-style sparkling store and enjoyed a table full of snacks, main dishes, and traditional drinks, experiencing the diverse flavors of Korean food and the charm of traditional culture. In particular, the carved yakgwa and tea made by ‘Eum’, a company discovered by the Gongjinwon through a competition for young entrepreneurs in the traditional culture field, were popular.

As part of the ‘Korean Food Cultural Event’, a special event, ‘Hansik ENSEMBLE’, was held on August 3rd at the 15th arrondissement square in Paris, contributing to cultural cooperation between Korea and France. About 200 local participants, including Director Jang Dong-kwang of the Korea Food Foundation and Mayor Philippe GOUJON of the 15th arrondissement of Paris, made a large bibimbap with various ingredients, and reflected on the Olympic spirit of coexistence of various cultures beyond nationality.

From August 6th to 7th, a ‘Korean Food Culture Class’ was held at the OORI Center (Espace OORI) located in the heart of the 15th arrondissement of Paris, where participants experienced preparing a main table. The class was led by CEO Joohee Jeong, who graduated from Le Cordon Bleu culinary school and has been promoting Korean food culture locally. After the instructor’s demonstration, participants put the food they made themselves into organic dishes and experienced the essence of Korean food culture with traditional liquor. Various side programs were also held at the site, such as making mini mother-of-pearl small tables, making dried pollack key rings, a bojagi workshop, and experiencing traditional games, along with the Korean food culture box (royal banquet) that Gongjinwon supplied to the French Cultural Center.

Meanwhile, the Korea Food and Culture Foundation plans to continue to promote Korean food culture by selecting representative countries with a high interest in Korean traditional culture. In particular, the Korean Food Culture Box, which has been distributed to overseas cultural institutions since 2021 as part of the Korean food culture promotion project, is scheduled to be distributed to a total of three places within the year, including the Korean Cultural Center in South Africa, the Korean Cultural Center in Mexico, and the Korean Cultural Center in Shanghai.
