On an unforgettable night for Universidad Católica, they took home three valuable points from their visit to Colombian territory on matchday 3 of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana.
With goals from Pedro Franco (own goal), Jhon Cifuente and Ismael Díaz, the “Trencito Azul” defeated Alianza de Valledupar 3-1. With this result, the Ecuadorian team took the lead in Group B with 7 points in its first three matches.
In a match where things went from bad to worse, Universidad Católica came back from a negative score after Emerson Batalla’s goal (8′) for the home team.
The changes paid off for Jorge Celico and in a great second half from his team, they were able to turn the result around with goals from Cifuente, Díaz and an own goal from Franco. Faithful to their style of play, Católica never stopped attacking, finding their reward with three goals in the 56th, 68th and 78th minutes.
Coming in as a substitute in the second half, Jhon Jairo Cifuente ended up as the star of the match with a goal and an assist for the final 3-1. Universidad Católica is well on its way to a hypothetical qualification, as it has two home games against Alianza and Unión La Calera.
