The Sudanese Foreign Ministry said that “Rapid Support Forces” fighters attacked a village in the center of the country, looted and burned many properties, and killed at least 85 people, including women and children.”
“The Rapid Support Forces began attacking Galgani in the central state of Sennar in late July,” the ministry added, noting that “its fighters opened fire indiscriminately last week on unarmed villagers after they resisted attempts to abduct and sexually assault women and girls. More than 150 villagers were wounded,” it added.
Residents in the area said that hundreds of Rapid Support Forces fighters stormed the village last Thursday, looting and burning homes and public property. They said that the medical center had received at least 80 bodies, including 24 women and minors, by Friday.
According to United Nations data, fighting has been ongoing between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces since mid-April 2023, resulting in about 13,100 deaths, while the total number of displaced people in Sudan has reached about 7.9 million people, and about 2.1 million people to neighboring countries.
