In Sudan, “violence must stop. It risks a catastrophic conflagration that could engulf the entire region and beyond,” the UN chief warned at a Security Council meeting held under the theme “effective multilateralism through the defense of the principles of the UN Charter and the 1970 Declaration on the Principles of International Law.”

He called on parties to the conflict to cease fighting in populated areas and allow unhindered humanitarian aid operations, stressing that civilians must have access to food, water and other essential supplies.

Urging the warring parties to ease tensions and return to the negotiating table, the UN chief noted that efforts are continuing with partners to achieve, as soon as possible, a “permanent halt” to the clashes.

At the meeting, chaired by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council for the month of April, the UN Secretary-General stressed that the United Nations will not leave Sudan. “Our commitment is to the Sudanese people, in support of their aspirations for a peaceful and secure future,” he insisted.

He said he was authorising the temporary relocation inside and outside Sudan of some UN personnel.

The senior UN official also called on all members of the Council to exert “maximum pressure” on the parties to end the violence, restore order and resume the path of democratic transition.
