KHARTOUM, (Xinhua) — The Sudanese government has declared that the United Nations envoy to the African country, Volker Perthes, is no longer welcome.

The statement was made in a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, just weeks after the commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces, Abdel Fattah Al Burhan, demanded the removal of Perthes from his position in a letter addressed to the Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres.

The Sudanese government has already officially notified Guterres that his representative in Sudan, Volker Perthes, also head of the United Nations Integrated Mission for Transition Assistance in Sudan (Unitams), “has been declared persona non grata as of Thursday.” said the Foreign Ministry.

Perthes, who has been out of Sudan since the end of May, held several meetings in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Thursday, Unitams said in a statement.

Al Burhan sent a letter to Guterres on May 26 asking him to replace Perthes.

On June 2, the UN Security Council unanimously passed resolution 2685 to extend the Unitams’ mandate until December 3, 2023.
