jpnn.comJAKARTA – Co-captain of the Anies-Muhaimin (AMIN) National Team, Sudirman Said, revealed that the methods used by President Jokowi’s regime in the 2024 presidential election are the same as those used during the Soeharto era in the 1971 elections. In fact, he said the methods used now are more primitive.

Sudirman conveyed this at the Book Review of Ken Ward’s “NU, PNI and 1971 Election Violence” (1972) which was held at Bakoel Kopi, Cikini, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (2/4).

Initially, Sudirman shared his experiences regarding violence and intimidation carried out by the New Order regime during the 1971 elections. From parties who were intimidated by ABRI many times to clerics who did not want to support Golkar at that time were hunted down and tortured.

“From the story of the clerics who were summoned and intimidated, perhaps I noted that at that time the clerics who supported other than Golkar, NU and PPP, were searched for. But then they were thrown into a well. They were tortured with bamboo poles by ABRI members at that time, officers as ABRI. That’s what happened. “I remember that situation very well,” said Sudirman.

He conveyed several comparisons regarding the differences in Indonesia’s economic conditions at that time. However, at that time there was a massive consolidation to win Golkar.

“The illiteracy rate was still very high, so at that time the government which had just finished taking over from the Old Order, which inherited a very difficult economic situation, was sort of improving it, yes, because of that it was carrying out crazy massive consolidation. “what was said earlier had an impact that turned out to be the same in the next 20 years, 1998, and then fundamental changes occurred,” he said.

He then said that the way of thinking and acting used by the New Order regime at that time was actually the same as today, in fact it was said that the current way of doing it was more primitive.

“What I want to convey here is that there is a foundation for thinking and acting differently but doing the same things even more primitively than they did in the 70s,” he said.
