Sugar harvest in Cuba 2024-2025: only 15 mills will grind

by times news cr

A few weeks before the start of the 2024-2025 sugar harvest in Cuba, the outlook is terrifying, since only 15 mills will grind and this is insufficient.

The communist authorities publicly acknowledged the difficulties facing the industry, but so far no official data has been provided on the results of the latest campaign, nor have they offered solutions to improve it.

The situation generates uncertainty among workers in the sector and the general population, since it is a necessary product that remains scarce.

William Licourt González, general secretary of the sugar workers union, warned about the challenges that the next harvest will bring, describing it as “very complex.”

The most revealing data was provided by the vice president of the Council of Ministers, Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca, who reported that only 15 sugar mills will be active during the 2024-2025 campaign.

This number is the lowest in the history of the Cuban industry, reflecting a drastic reduction in milling capacity compared to just three years ago, when 36 mills were operating.

The Cuban presenter Alexander Otaola spoke about this topic on his program Hola! Ota-Ola, where it showed the reality of a candy company, belonging to the Cuban state and that did not have the main ingredient: sugar.

Given this situation, they urged mills that cannot grind cane to diversify their activities, producing derivatives such as molasses and alcohols.

The problems for sugar production persist in the country: lack of labor, fuel shortage and equipment in poor condition, meanwhile the communist regime continues to focus on aspects that generate income for its own pockets, instead of paying attention to the food issue of the Antilleans.
