The National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives (Chairman Noh Dong-jin) announced on the 22nd that employees at a fisheries cooperative mutual finance branch who sensed voice phishing helped the police make an arrest and protected customers’ money worth nearly 300 million won.

On the 21st, Chairman Noh Dong-jin of the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives visited the headquarters of Daecheon West Fisheries Cooperative in Boryeong, South Chungcheong Province, and awarded a commendation to two executives and employees of Daecheon West Fisheries Cooperative for their quick response and resourcefulness in preventing voice phishing crimes, and greatly encouraged them.

According to the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, an elderly customer who visited the Daecheon West Fisheries Cooperatives headquarters on the 18th of last month requested to cancel a time deposit containing 259 million won and withdraw cash.

Director Cheon Seok-jeong, who found this suspicious, requested the completion of a ‘financial fraud prevention diagnosis form’ that must be submitted when withdrawing cash of 5 million won or more. Director Cheon began to suspect the possibility of voice phishing after seeing customers withdrawing large amounts of money at once. This was because it was unusual for customers to withdraw cash in a hurry.

However, due to the customer’s persistent request, he delivered 100 million won in cash and 159 million won in checks, and because the amount was so large, Director Chun instructed his co-worker, Manager Jeon Hyeon-tae, to carry it to his home in a paper bag with the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation’s logo.

After confirming that the customer had returned home safely, Manager Jeon returned to the branch to warn the customer of the dangers of voice phishing and then headed back to the victim’s home. There, he witnessed a suspicious woman walking around near the customer’s home carrying the same cooperative paper bag that the customer had taken.

The former manager intuitively felt that this woman was a voice phishing scammer, a so-called ‘face-to-face voice phishing scam’ where the victim gave cash directly, and reported it to the police, providing information about the woman’s appearance so that a quick investigation could be conducted.

Accordingly, the police arrested the woman near Cheonan Station on the same day based on the suspect’s movements and appearance, and the full amount of damages was recovered.

Unlike existing methods that request account transfers, etc., face-to-face voice phishing is a new method in which criminals find out the victim’s personal information and threaten them to meet the victim in person to steal money. Therefore, active and quick response from sales staff is very important in preventing damage.

Chairman Noh Dong-jin of the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives presented a commendation to Executive Director Chun and Manager Jeon on the same day, saying, “With this voice phishing prevention, not only did we save a customer’s property but also a family, but we also greatly increased the reliability of the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives’ mutual finance both domestically and internationally.”

In order to prevent damage from face-to-face voice phishing, Suhyup plans to widely spread the exemplary cases of Daecheon West Suhyup employees to frontline mutual finance sales offices.
