As the July 23rd National Convention to elect the next leadership of the People Power Party approaches in four days, concerns are being expressed within the party, with some saying, “There were high expectations when the official campaign for the convention began on the 26th of last month, but after watching the 23-day battle, I now feel devastated.”
A senior lawmaker from the Daegu-Gyeongbuk (TK) region of the People Power Party expressed concern on the 18th, saying, “I didn’t know it would go this far,” and “If the internal emotional divide deepens, I wonder if it will invite another disaster.” A first-term lawmaker from the Yeongnam region also said, “Civil war is the most brutal war,” and “In the past, internal conflict caused division and confrontation among conservatives, ultimately leading to the first impeachment of a president in history.”
Starting with the controversy over ignoring Ms. Kim Gun-hee’s Telegram, the candidates’ self-destructive war of words continued, with suspicions about Ms. Kim’s “comment team,” suspicions about candidate Han Dong-hoon’s public opinion creation team, and revelations about a “request for cancellation of the indictment in the National Assembly fast-track collision case” breaking out, leading to criticism that the opposition party was “only given the handle of the knife.” A People Power Party lawmaker from the metropolitan area said, “Only the opposition party is excited,” and criticized it, saying, “It’s like giving a raw chicken to a hunting dog that’s rushing at you to bite it.” A non-parliamentary party committee chairman said, “We gave the Democratic Party the tools to easily attack the ruling party by prioritizing judicial risks.”
There are also criticisms that the convention was inevitably preoccupied with internal strife as it was centered around pro-Yoon (pro-Yoon Seok-yeol) and pro-Yoon (pro-Han Dong-hoon) factions. A party official said, “Words like ‘traitor’ and ‘Yoon’s scapegoat’ dominated the convention, so there was no talk of ‘let’s unite and fight the opposition party.’”
The Democratic Party criticized the ruling party’s convention that day, saying, “Suspicions exploded like fireworks, turning it into a ‘suicide convention. ’” Democratic Party floor leader Park Chan-dae said on the day, “Candidate Han should be investigated for comments, candidate Na Kyung-won for requests, and candidate Won Hee-ryong for preferential treatment in the Yangpyeong Expressway,” and “Seriously consider changing the party name to ‘Power of Power’ or ‘Bulletproof Power. ’”
