Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar becomes the new King of Malaysia. In the Southeast Asian country there is a tradition that is unique in the world, according to which the head of state is not determined through hereditary succession or by the people through direct election, but is chosen by the nine monarchs of the states from among them for a period of five years according to a rotation principle.

According to agencies, the sultans, who are also seen as guardians of Islam, decided on Friday that the 64-year-old influential sultan of the southern Malaysian state of Johor will take over from current King Abdullah on January 31, 2024.

In Malaysia’s constitutional monarchy, the king, Yang di-Pertuan Agong or just Agong, primarily takes on representative tasks. Political instability in recent years has meant that the king has repeatedly shown a way out of a political stalemate by appointing a prime minister.
