It has been confirmed that the COVID-19 pandemic peaked this summer and is now on the decline.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency announced on the 30th that the results of its analysis of COVID-19 trends last week using a multi-layered surveillance system showed that the COVID-19 pandemic this summer has passed its peak.

According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency’s sample surveillance results, the number of hospitalized patients from the 18th to the 24th (week 34) was 1,170, a 20.1% decrease from the previous week (11th to 17th, 1,464).

The number of hospitalized patients decreased for five weeks this year (January 28 to February 3, 875 people) before increasing again in July and August.

In the surveillance of severe acute respiratory infections, the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients was reported to be 46 from the 18th to the 23rd. After peaking at 83 from the 4th to the 10th, it has been decreasing for two consecutive weeks.

Since COVID-19 was upgraded to a Class 4 infectious disease, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency has been checking the number of COVID-19 hospitalized patients every week at 220 medical institutions with more than 200 beds nationwide.

In addition, 42 general hospital-level or higher medical institutions are currently assessing the number of COVID-19 hospitalized patients who have experienced a fever, have a high fever of 38 degrees or higher, have a cough, or have had symptoms within the past 10 days or require hospitalization.

In addition to the decrease in the number of hospitalized patients, the detection rate of the COVID-19 pathogen also decreased by 4.4 percentage points (pp) compared to the previous week to 39%. The concentration of the COVID-19 virus in sewage also decreased by 3 percentage points compared to the previous week.

The number of patients visiting emergency rooms also increased from 9,053 between July 28 and August 3 to 12,261 between August 4 and 10, but then slowed to 13,250 between the 11th and 17th, and then decreased to 8,025 between the 18th and 24th.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) predicts that the number of new COVID-19 patients will be less than 200,000, which is less than the initial estimate of 350,000 weekly new cases.

“The analysis results show that all indicators, including the number of hospitalized patients, are decreasing, so we believe that the COVID-19 outbreak this summer has peaked,” said Director-General of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency Ji Young-mi.

He also urged, “In order to quickly stabilize the epidemic, we must follow the COVID-19 infection prevention guidelines during the Chuseok holiday, and high-risk groups should actively participate in the COVID-19 vaccination that will be conducted in October.”
