It was revealed that the amount of insurance payouts for damage caused by typhoons, heavy rain, etc. has tripled in the past 10 years due to abnormal weather.

According to the Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance Transportation Climate Environment Research Institute’s analysis of its flood damage insurance status from 2013 to 2023, the amount of insurance money paid out for flood damage last year was about three times that of 2013. The total number of insurance money paid out over 11 years was 4,248. The number of flood damage insurance contracts itself also increased by about four times from 2013 to 13,302 last year. Compared to the average number of contracts over the past five years (5,254 cases), it has increased by 153%.

In particular, last year, insurance payments due to heavy rain damage exceeded those due to typhoon damage for the first time. The proportion of insurance payments due to typhoon damage, which was close to the mid-70% range in 2013, fell to around 40% in 2023. During the same period, the proportion of insurance payments due to heavy rain surged from the 10% range to the 50% range.

The amount of precipitation and the number of days it lasted also had an effect on increasing the amount of insurance payments. When the precipitation on the day was 80mm or more, the average amount of insurance payments tended to increase, and when the cumulative precipitation for 3 days was 140mm or more, the amount of insurance payments increased sharply by more than double. The institute analyzed that “even if the precipitation was not concentrated on the same day, damage due to heavy rain occurred even when the cumulative precipitation increased for 2-3 days.”

Meanwhile, the number of vehicles flooded due to heavy rain this month has exceeded 3,000. From the 6th to 3 PM on the 19th, 3,230 vehicles were reported to 12 non-life insurance companies that sell automobile insurance. Compared to 9 AM on the 17th (2,161 vehicles), over 1,000 vehicles were flooded during the period of heavy rain in the metropolitan area. The estimated damage amount has also increased to a total of 29.161 billion won.
