(ANSA) – ROME, AUGUST 31 – Summer of overtourism? Yes, but only in some locations. Summer of large numbers? Yes, but thanks above all to foreign tourists and less to Italians with less money available and massacred by high prices. In short, a chiaroscuro picture emerges from the Assoturismo Confesercenti survey, carried out by the Centro Studi Turistici of Florence, which speaks of a summer quarter below expectations with a -0.7% of overnight stays and a drop in Italians (-2.9%) offset however by an increase in foreign presences (+1.6%). Seaside tourism is down (-2%), but mountain (-1%) and spa (-1.4%) are also down. Cultural tourism is holding up, also here thanks to visitors from abroad. The 2.9% drop in Italian demand was felt in particular in seaside (-4.1%), spa (-5.3%) and lake (-3.7%) locations. In absolute terms, 105.4 million overnight stays by Italians are estimated for the summer quarter, compared to 108.6 million in 2023. The European markets that recorded significant growth were France, Poland, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Belgium. There was also a slight increase in arrivals from Scandinavian countries, Switzerland, Hungary and Spain. On the other hand, drops of varying degrees were reported for Austrians, Germans and British. For arrivals from non-European markets, the indications of significant growth were for Americans and Australians, but an increase was also recorded for Brazilians, Canadians and Koreans. Chinese, Japanese and Indian flows and in general arrivals from Arab countries were in decline. With the exception of the North West (+0.4%), drops of varying degrees were recorded in all macro areas, in particular in the North East regions for which a drop of -1% is estimated. The estimated decline for the Central regions drops to -0.8%, while for the Southern areas and Islands it stops at -0.6%. (ANSA).
