Summit of the present: art in the Swiss Engadine

A story that takes place in the Engadine can begin in the dazzling light or in the darkness: at midday in the white glittering snow on top of the Piz Corvatsch, 3000 meters above sea level, where you become snow blind if you don’t wear sunglasses – or down in the valley, in the pine forests, where it gets darker at night than anywhere else in Switzerland, especially when there is no moonlight falling on the snow.

It is also very dark in the place that the art collector, photographer and playboy Gunter Sachs once founded at Via Maistra 54 in St. Moritz, the Dracula Club. It is a private club and only opens to the general public when the “Festival da Jazz” takes place there, as it will again next summer. Now, on this winter evening, the guests are dancing, as always, under a coffin that, in honor of Dracula, is hanging from the ceiling, a few young men, perhaps in their early twenties, climb a platform, the crowd in front of them forms an alley and grabs hold of the coffin hands, whereupon one by one they fall into this hammock of arms to the sounds of Tears for Fears.
