The UK continues to support Israel’s right to self-defence but is shocked by the bloodshed in the Gaza Strip. This was stated by Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Rishi Sunak, emphasizing that the conflict between Israel and the radical Palestinian movement Hamas must end, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.
“Six months into the war in Gaza, the situation for civilians continues to get worse. The hunger, desperation and death toll are staggering,” Sunak said in a statement released by his office. “We continue to support Israel’s right to defend itself against threats from Hamas terrorists and ensure their own safety, but the whole of the United Kingdom is shocked by the bloodshed and horrified by the murder of brave British heroes [из гуманитарной организации World Central Kitchen]who delivered food to those who needed it. This terrible conflict must end.”
Sunak called for the immediate release of hostages held by Hamas and the opening of routes to deliver humanitarian aid to the enclave. According to him, the fastest way to achieve this is by immediately declaring a humanitarian pause.
Foreign Minister David Cameron, for his part, told The Sunday Times that Britain’s assistance to Israel “is not unconditional.” The announcements come amid growing pressure on the British government from MPs and organizations seeking a ban on British arms sales to Israel.
The British Ministry of Defense also reported that the kingdom has sent a naval ship to the Eastern Mediterranean to help establish a humanitarian sea corridor between Cyprus and the Gaza Strip, where a temporary pier will be built to receive humanitarian supplies. The corridor is expected to become operational in early May with support from the UN, US and other UK partners. The Foreign Office has also allocated £9.7 million ($12.3 million) to send humanitarian aid and equipment to Gaza to keep the corridor running.
