Suncheon City, 2024 Suncheon Tourism Week to be held from July 22 to 26 with the theme of ‘Saving Local, Suncheon’

The hottest topic in the tourism industry recently is ‘responding to the crisis of local extinction.’

Government ministries, including the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, are working to attract tourists who stay in the region and secure a resident population through tourism response measures such as workations, local living, and night-time tourism.

Suncheon City is also promoting tourism policies to attract residents, such as garden workation, a week-long trip to Suncheon (Suncheon Diary), and securing content to promote residential tourism.

In order for these various policies to succeed, we need to think about how to combine external consumer groups with local resources to develop killer content and make a leap forward toward sustainable tourism.

Accordingly, the city will operate the 2024 Suncheon Tourism Week for five days from July 22 to 26 to collect opinions from local tourism activists and tourism experts nationwide to improve the tourism industry’s constitution in response to the local situation and new tourism trends, and to seek ways to develop differentiated tourism content that reflects the characteristics of the region.

▶ Establishing a regional tourism network that directly discovers, plans, and implements regional tourism content

Suncheon City is spurring the development of regional-led tourism organizations to provide resident-centered tourism services in line with the ‘localism’ trend that utilizes the region’s unique strengths and pursues sustainable tourism.

The city established the ‘Suncheon Tourism Network’ in January of this year to promote exchanges between local tourism stakeholders and support the development and operation of self-sustaining, independent content through advance planning with experienced tourism officials and professors from related departments in the region.

“Sunhyang Net,” which means “a network of people heading to Suncheon,” is comprised of people in the travel, lodging, and food service industries in the Suncheon area, and holds a meeting once a month to share opinions on planning tourism products and suggesting ideas for current tourism issues among tourism professionals in the Suncheon area.

In addition, the city, together with Sunhyangnet, plans and operates various tourism products that utilize Suncheon’s resources, such as black-faced spoonbill observation tours and night garden tours, which are receiving great responses from tourists.

▶’Save the Local, Suncheon’ Suncheon Tourism Activation Forum Held

On the 24th, a tourism revitalization forum will be held at the Garden Vacation Center with the theme of ‘Saving Local, Suncheon.’

This forum will begin with the question, “Can’t the problem of deepening regional extinction be solved with ‘tourism’?” and will listen to presentations from local activists who are creating travel content using Suncheon’s resources, and discuss the future of sustainable tourism in Suncheon that coexists with the region through discussions by a panel of local content experts from around the country.

A local content exhibition space will be created within the event venue to promote Suncheon’s unique local businesses, and a networking time will also be provided among participants after the forum.

Applications for participants can be submitted through Google Form starting July 16th.

▶ Showcasing the charms of Suncheon, a tour with a travel agency in the metropolitan area

The city will hold a fam tour to attract group tourists on two occasions, July 22nd and 25th, by inviting travel agencies in the metropolitan area.

This fam tour will be conducted by recruiting participants from travel agencies in the metropolitan area, with priority given to those who attended the Suncheon Tourism Briefing Session held in Seoul on June 18.

The first session will focus on providing travel course guidance optimized for attracting group tourists by travel agencies, in response to the main question raised at the last tourism briefing session: whether there are any companies that can accommodate group tourists.

We will introduce restaurants and accommodations that can accommodate large groups of people near tourist attractions, and introduce the Night Garden Tour and the Seonamsa Wild Tea Experience Center at Suncheon Bay National Garden, a representative tourist attraction.

The second session will focus on introducing companies that operate community businesses utilizing Suncheon’s resources.

We will connect travel agencies and local tourism businesses to develop new Suncheon tourism products, and we will run tea experience and soap making experience programs and Seonamsa Snap Tour in cooperation with local businesses. We will also introduce the Deep-rooted Tree Museum, which was selected by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as one of the Local 100 to find local cultural attractions and promote local cultural values.

This family tour is differentiated from the existing family tours that only visited major tourist attractions such as Suncheon Bay National Garden and Suncheon Bay Wetland, and is conducted in a way that is tailored to the needs of travel agencies. It is expected that this will lead to the attraction of actual tourists.

The future of Suncheon tourism, which will be drawn together with the region through the 2024 Suncheon Tourism Week, is anticipated.
