The opening ceremony of Suncheon Bay National Garden was held to announce a new leap forward as a city of garden culture. Suncheon City (Mayor Noh Kwan-gyu) raised the curtain in a grand manner, announcing a new leap forward from being a garden city to becoming a garden culture city.

On April 1, the opening ceremony of the Suncheon Bay National Garden was held at the Nammun Space Hub with the participation of about 10,000 citizens and visitors under the theme of ‘Astronauts also come to Suncheon’.

Attending the event on this day were central government officials, including Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Yoo In-chon, South Jeolla Province Governor Kim Young-rok, and Korea Forest Service Director Nam Sung-hyeon, who will help support the animation cluster industry that Suncheon City is focusing on as a future industry.

The event started with a joint performance by 200 children and youth who will be responsible for the future of Suncheon, followed by a declaration ceremony for the leap forward as a garden culture city, and a citizen parade from 24 towns and villages.

In particular, the very large Anivengers Parade, in which over 2,000 Suncheon citizens participated wearing characters from 24 towns, villages and districts, drew gasps from the audience with its enormous splendor.

The city plans to use the opening ceremony of the newly renovated national garden after the 2023 Garden Expo as an opportunity to gather the energy of all citizens to take a leap forward as a city of garden culture.

Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Yoo In-chon, who attended the event, said in a congratulatory speech, “When I visited Suncheon in 2008, I remember Mayor Noh Kwan-gyu’s words when he saw the mud flats and said he would risk everything on the ecology and environment and design the future as a city that saves the environment.” said. He continued, “When I came back here again, I was surprised to feel that what I had thought back then was coming to fruition.” He added, “Now, Suncheon is being reborn as a city of garden culture. “I hope that everyone here will lead the new Suncheon,” he said.

Suncheon Mayor Noh Kwan-gyu expressed his ambition, saying, “The National Garden has been completely reborn by adding cultural content to excellent analog elements. Now, with the power of gardens and culture, Suncheon will go beyond being a garden city and take a new leap forward into a global cultural city.”

Meanwhile, Suncheon Bay National Garden opens all year round starting on April 1st and is closed on the last Monday of every month. Additional details can be found on the Suncheon Bay National Garden website.
