Expansion of residential tourism and cultural, sports, and welfare facilities through development of high-quality Yeonhyang-do along with public resource facilities

Suncheon City (Mayor Noh Kwan-gyu) presented a future blueprint for the Yeonhyang-deul next to Suncheon Bay National Garden. Along with the promotion of the Yeonhyang-deul urban development project, the construction of cultural, sports, and welfare facilities linked to public resource facilities will be reviewed to accommodate citizens’ diverse needs for public facilities within Yeonhyang-deul.

◇ Filling up Suncheon’s insufficient infrastructure with the smooth implementation of Yeonhyang-dong urban development projects!

The Yeonhyang-dong Urban Development Project is a project to develop 488,459㎡ of land in Yeonhyang-dong and Daean-ri, Haeryong-myeon by 2028. It is planned to include accommodation facilities such as resorts and hotels, as well as apartment complexes, single-family homes, and commercial spaces for the convenience of residents. A mixed-use site will also be prepared to flexibly respond to various business demands.

The Yeonhyang area is a space with optimal location conditions based on excellent accessibility, and is adjacent to the Suncheon Bay National Garden, the first national garden in Korea, providing the best living and working environment.

The city is currently awaiting approval for the urban development zone designation and development plan from Jeollanam-do, and plans to promptly move forward with compensation and distribution procedures after approval.

◇ Utilizing the heat from incineration of public resource facilities, it plays a leading role in everything from citizen welfare to energy self-sufficiency!

Suncheon has emerged as a representative eco-tourism city in Korea by successfully hosting the 2023 Suncheon Bay International Garden Expo. However, the lack of large-scale accommodation facilities that can convert the external consumer group brought in by the expo into residential tourism has been consistently pointed out as a somewhat regrettable point.

In addition, at the 15th Suncheon Mutual Growth Talk, where Mayor Roh Gwan-gyu of Suncheon personally attended and listened to the various voices of citizens, there were many voices calling for the expansion of cultural and sports facilities such as swimming pools, performance halls, and badminton courts.

Accordingly, the city is promoting the ‘Yeonhyangdeul Urban Development Project’ and creating various cultural, sports, and welfare facilities appropriate to the city’s status.

We are promoting the construction of a new swimming pool with international standard 50m lanes to respond to the increased demand for recreational sports, while also promoting a four-season water play facility that can be used as a water park in the summer and a skating rink in the winter.

In addition, a multipurpose complex facility will be built, including a badminton court, a sports rehabilitation center, and state-of-the-art welfare facilities. In addition, an arts center and a public indoor riding center for rehabilitation and leisure will be built nearby, to support citizens’ enriched leisure life.

In addition, these cultural, sports, and welfare facilities require a lot of energy for hot water, heating, and cooling, and the city plans to use the next-generation public resource facility incineration heat to improve operational efficiency, while also setting a new milestone by changing citizens’ perception of incineration facilities and creating energy-independent hub spaces.

◇ Creating a leading model for urban development by gathering diverse voices from citizens

The development of the Yeonhyang area, which is currently under construction, aims to reflect the diverse voices of citizens as much as possible.

City officials emphasized, “The Yeonhyang-deul Urban Development Project is not a simple development project,” and “We are pushing forward with the project with a focus on returning the Yeonhyang-deul area to a space for citizens by reflecting the diverse voices of citizens.”

Communication is also transparent and active. After the city prepared the plan, it immediately held a mutual growth talk with local opinion leaders to share matters related to the development of Yeonhyang-deul and began collecting opinions.

The city announced that it will continue to listen to various opinions on cultural, sports, and welfare facilities to be built in the Yeonhyang area, and that it will work with the surrounding area resident support council to be formed in the future to concretize the contents.

Mayor Roh Gwan-gyu of Suncheon City said, “The area around Yeonhyang-deul adjacent to Suncheon Bay National Garden will become a new landmark that shows the direction the city should take in the future,” and emphasized, “We will do our best to review various cultural, sports, and welfare facilities that are appropriate for the city’s status as a top priority so that it can be reborn as a space for citizens.”
