Commemorative performance on the theme of Maesan Deungseongyo Village

Suncheon City (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) announced that the Cultural Heritage Night Tour, which took place for four days from the 15th to the 18th in the areas of Suncheon Hyang-dong (Seonbi Village) and Maegok-dong (Seon-gyo Village), ended its beautiful summer night journey with approximately 48,000 visitors.

This cultural heritage night tour expanded beyond the existing Palmabi-Suncheonhyanggyo section to include the Maesan area, presenting a differentiated attempt to highlight the value of traditional cultural heritage left behind by our ancestors and the modern medical, educational, and missionary heritage left behind by missionaries 100 years ago.

A total of 15 experiential programs were held, and each program was coherently organized to contain the meaning of architecture and heritage. In addition, three invited lectures were held on the topics of architecture, cultural heritage, and gardens.

The highlight of this night tour was a commemorative performance on the theme of Maesan Deung Mission Village, which was opened to the public for the first time in 100 years. The performance began with a monologue by missionary Gorabok (Koiit)* as a speaker, meeting the people of Joseon, and showed the footsteps of missionary work, medical care, and education over the past 100 years. The process of creating Maesan Deung and the value of modern heritage were vividly conveyed through reading performances, videos, orchestra ensembles, laser art, and installation art.

A citizen who watched the performance said, “I have experienced many night performances, but this is the first time I have experienced such a meaningful and heart-wrenching ceremony,” and “It was a place where the value and emotion of our heritage were conveyed at the same time.”

Despite the midsummer heat, the night tour became a pinpoint point targeting families during the vacation period. In some popular experience programs, there were even situations where participants wrote down their own phone numbers and waited.

It also had a positive impact on the local economy. Food trucks at the event sold out their daily supply, and nearby cafes and restaurants stayed open until 10 p.m. Food trucks at the event did not sell drinks to promote coexistence with nearby businesses.

In particular, this cultural heritage night walk stood out for its collaboration with various organizations. The Suncheon Fire Department participated in operating experiential programs such as CPR training, and residents of Hyang-dong and Maegok-dong participated as assistants, lighting up the night walk together. Related organizations such as the Suncheon Police Station, Model Drivers Association, Cultural Heritage Care Center, Suncheon Maesan High School, Maesan Girls’ High School, Maesan Middle School, and Suncheon Hyanggyo cooperated to support the successful operation of the event.

City officials said, “This event was a meaningful time to rediscover the value of local cultural heritage and for the local community to come together,” and added, “We will continue to work to improve the event so that it can be even more meaningful in the future and increase citizen satisfaction.”
