Bulgarian sunflower and olive oil depend on the EU’s decision on the import regime from Ukraine after September 15

Too much sunflower and there is too much oil in the warehouses of Bulgarian producers and processors, it became clear at the meeting of the two branches yesterday in the building of the Ministry of Agriculture. Minister Kiril Vatev gathered the National Association of Grain Producers (NAZ) and the Association of Vegetable Oil and Product Oil Producers to analyze the market situation.

After the meeting, it was announced that it remains to be seen what the European Union will decide on the ban on the import of Ukrainian grain and sunflower, including oil, after September 15 in five countries, including Bulgaria.

The desire of the processors is to drop the ban, as there is no effect of its application. However, manufacturers believe that the restrictive regime should be extended.

This morning before BNT the chairman of the association of processors Yani Yanev said that Ukraine prefers to process sunflower into oil and export the finished product. He explained that Ukrainian farmers manage to produce enough sunflowers, part of which they export at an unmarketably low price. Precisely because it is cheap, Ukrainian sunflower is necessary for domestic processors to be competitive in international markets. The processors’ association is in favor of subsidizing oilseed producers to compensate for low purchase prices.

From his side Iliya Prodanov, chairman of NAZ, stated that the ban on the import of Ukrainian sunflower helped to increase the price of the oilseed by about BGN 100 per ton. The current price of about BGN 750/ton is below the cost of production, and the price of the new harvest remains to be seen. There are about 600,000 tons of last year’s harvest lying in the warehouses.

Iliya Prodanov also pointed out that over the years Bulgarian sunflower was almost never exported, it is processed by Bulgarian enterprises, thanks to which they are not only financially stable, but have expanded their activities.

The Ukrainian sunflower is of good quality and arrives perfectly prepared from the producers in the military zone, said Yani Yanev. The quality has been proven during the numerous inspections carried out this spring. Regarding the native sunflower, Yanev specified that only some producers cook the product well.
