“It’s a me, Mario!” “A phrase that has passed through an entire generation and heard by thousands of young players, on GameBoy in the 1990s until its arrival on Switch in the 2010s. This phrase, this voice, are those of Charles Martinet who had embodied Nintendo’s famous video game plumber since 1996.

The American branch of the company announced in a press release Monday evening that the 67-year-old actor would stop dubbing the character of Mario for the brand’s video games, after 27 years as an official voice. “It was an honor to work with Charles to help Mario live for so many years and we want to thank him and celebrate him”, underlines Nintendo, which promises a “special video message from Shigeru Miyamoto (the creator of Mario) and Charles himself” in the coming days.

Already replaced in the movie “Super Mario Bros”

Charles Martinet not only played Mario, but also his brother Luigi, as well as their rivals Wario and Waluigi, but also Baby Mario, Baby Luigi and Grandpa Champi. He even holds the world record for the most dubs for the same video game character. American of French origin, he is fluent in French, which has allowed him to provide several French-speaking dubbings.

Charles Martinet, however, did not play the famous plumber in the film “Super Mario Bros”, released in April. It was then Chris Pratt and Pierre Tessier who played Mario in the American and French versions. Charles Martinet, for his part, had then dubbed Giuseppe and Mario’s father in both languages.

The actor will now be an “ambassador of Mario”, he evokes on social network X (ex-Twitter) “a new adventure that begins” for him in this role.
