“Super Mario Bros: The Movie” retained first place at the box office in the United States and Canada a week after its epic opening: the animated film based on the famous video game once again defeated all its competitors, according to estimates published on Sunday.

The Universal, Nintendo and Illumination studio production grossed $87 million in ticket sales from Friday to Sunday, bringing the film’s total gross to more than $347 million, Exhibitor Relations said.

The specialized firm had already anticipated that “Super Mario” will be the highest-grossing film of 2023.

Coming in a distant second was Sony’s “Exorcist of the Pope,” starring Russell Crowe, which grossed $9.1 million.

“This is a solid opening for a horror movie on a modest budget,” said analyst David A. Gross.

Third place went to “John Wick 4” with $7.9 million, bringing its four-week gross in the US and Canada to $160 million.

In the fourth installment of the saga, Keanu Reeves reprises his role as a contract killer, this time to combat an international criminal group.

The horror comedy “Renfield,” distributed by Universal, grossed $7.7 million in its opening weekend and came in fourth place.

Amazon Studios’ “Air,” a sports drama about the origins of Nike’s Air Jordan line of basketball shoes, slipped to fifth place this week with $7.7 million in gross.

They complete the ranking of the 10 highest grossing films:

6. “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” ($7.3 million)

7. “Suzume” (5 million dollars)

8. “The Mob Heiress” ($2 million)

9. “Scream VI” ($1.4 million)

10. “Nefarious” (1.3 million)
