In a recent Nintendo Direct, the biggest surprise came in the form of the announcement of a Super Mario RPG remake for the Switch. The game, originally released by Square in 1996, will now feature updated 3D graphics and cinematics.

Fans were not the only ones caught off guard by this news. Chihiro Fujioka, one of the original directors of the classic Super Mario RPG, expressed his surprise and delight in a social media exchange with a fan. Although not involved in the remake, Fujioka shared his excitement, stating, “Oh my God, finally! Both the art and music are wonderfully upgraded! I’m really looking forward to seeing how the feel of various mini-games and fields evolves!”

Fujioka’s enthusiasm for the game’s release on November 17th suggests that he may even check out the updated version himself. In a previous interview, Fujioka expressed his desire to create a follow-up to Super Mario RPG, potentially making it his final game. He stated, “Yeah, I would absolutely love to make one…yeah, so in my career, I’ve been involved in a lot of games and I would really like my final one to be another Mario RPG game, if possible…”

Aside from Super Mario RPG, Fujioka went on to become the head of AlphaDream, the studio best known for the Mario and Luigi series.
