Super Typhoon Yagi has killed at least two people and injured 92 others after hitting the southern Chinese island of Hainan, state news agency Xinhua reported on Saturday.

The storm hit “Hainan with heavy rain and gusty winds, leaving at least two people dead and 92 injured,” the paper reported, citing local authorities.

State broadcaster CCTV said the typhoon brought winds of more than 230 km per hour that uprooted trees and led to the evacuation of some 460,000 people on the island.

Yagi made landfall on Friday in Hainan, a popular holiday destination for Chinese tourists.

Its authorities have ordered the closure of its main airport in the city of Haikou until 3:00 p.m. (07:00 GMT) on Saturday, CCTV reported.

In neighbouring Guangdong province, China’s most populous, the typhoon prompted the evacuation of more than 574,000 residents to safer locations.

The cyclone earlier this week killed at least 13 people in the Philippines, where it arrived at tropical storm status before gaining intensity on its way to China.

The storm is now expected to move towards northern Vietnam, where it is expected to hit the famous Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
