Fans of Chris Hemsworth can be happy: The fourth part of “Thor” is coming to the cinemas. This time the thunder god is lovesick.

London.

Two gigantic, screaming goats are the secret stars of “Thor: Love And Thunder”. Chris Hemsworth as Thor, the god of thunder, gets it as a thank you gift after a more or less successful rescue operation with the Guardians Of The Galaxy on a foreign planet.

From then on, the two animals with their strange screams are Thor’s constant companions in the wacky superhero comedy by director Taika Waititi (“Jojo Rabbit”).

The thunder god is lovesick

The 29th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the fourth with Thor as the title hero, begins very dramatically. Somewhere in the desert on some planet, the mortal Gorr (Christian Bale) prays in vain for rain. His little daughter dies. When he is mocked by a god shortly afterwards, fate gives him a sword with which he can kill gods. As Gorr, the slayer of gods, he lives up to his name from now on. At some point he has his sights set on Thor.

Meanwhile, the Thunder God (Chris Hemsworth) is lovesick. He misses his human ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). What he doesn’t know: she has terminal cancer. In search of a cure, Jane travels to New Asgaard where something unexpected happens. Although Jane is not a goddess, the magic of Thor’s hammer transforms her into the superhero Mighty Thor. Together with Thor, Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and the stone creature Korg (voice: Waititi) she faces the godslayer.

Gorr, whom Bale plays wonderfully terrifying with borrowings from Nosferatu, has kidnapped all the children of New Asgaard into his shadowy world

Crazy comedy

After Marvel recently went almost esoteric with Chloé Zhao’s long-winded “Eternals” and Sam Raimi’s “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness” contained elements of the classic horror film, the New Zealander Waititi has again shot a colorful comedy in which the participants apparently don’t care gag were too bad. In addition to the screaming goats, a play in New Asgaard starring Matt Damon and Melissa McCarthy and Russell Crowe as the narcissistic supreme god Zeus provide laughs. And Thor, who has feelings not only for Jane but also for his hammer.

There are also some dramatic moments, after all, in addition to all the colorful superhero spectacle, there is also illness and loss. With his Oscar-winning stroke of genius “Jojo Rabbit”, Waikiki proved that he can reconcile tragedy and humor. However, the dramatic moments don’t get that close here, “Thor” is too silly for that overall. Some emotional scenes towards the end of the film also seem long-winded and badly forced.

Effect-heavy hustle and bustle

The new superhero outfits from Thor and Co. almost look like they were designed by a toy manufacturer. Another shortcoming – as with “Eternals” and other films of the genre – are the computer-generated, unoriginal monsters, some of which are hardly recognizable. Bombastic battles with such creatures have become far too commonplace at Marvel and correspondingly boring.

The effects-heavy hustle and bustle is accompanied by a rocking soundtrack with 1980s and 1990s flair, which contains several songs by hard rock icons Guns n’ Roses. The credits, which as usual contain a scene in the middle and one at the end, were designed in the look of the band logos of 80s groups. You just have to approve of so much attention to detail.

Waititi may not be able to top his grandiose predecessor “Thor: Ragnarok” (inappropriate German title: “Thor: Day of Decision”), but with “Thor: Love And Thunder” he brings another entertaining, visually impressive comic adventure to the screen , which, by the way – unlike the complicated “Doctor Strange” sequel – can be watched without much prior MCU knowledge.
