US President Joe Biden has confirmed that Washington will not supply Israel with 2,000-pound bombs, citing the potential for a “great human tragedy.” Biden told a news conference that such weapons could not be used in Gaza or other populated areas without serious consequences for civilians.
But the president also emphasized that the United States continues to support Israel in strengthening its security in other ways, including successfully preventing missile and drone attacks from Iran, organized jointly with European and Arab allies.
“We were able to bring together the Arab countries and Europe, and that prevented threats. That was a big lesson for everything that happens in the Middle East,” Biden said, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in regional security.
He also commented on the negotiation process between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas regarding the release of hostages.
The White House chief indicated that an end to military action in Gaza would not mean an end to efforts to pursue militant leaders. He stressed the importance of continuing operations against key terrorist figures such as Yahya Sinwar despite the desire to end the conflict.
Biden also addressed the Israeli military cabinet, advising them to avoid seizing territory and focus on specifically finding and neutralizing terrorist leaders. He mentioned that such measures should contribute to a more effective fight against terrorism, avoiding the mistakes made in the past.
The United States will continue to support Israel in ensuring national security and in combating terrorist threats, especially after active hostilities cease, according to American officials.
