SPRANG-CAPELLE – When your family is suddenly confronted with a serious and incurable disease such as cystic fibrosis (CF), also known as cystic fibrosis, the question quickly arises: how can I help?
You feel the need to contribute to scientific research into the cause, treatment and ultimate cure of this disease. That is why Gerrie Baarslag and Ger Jenneskens, both grandparents of a grandchild with CF, are organizing a sale and collection at Plus Frans Andriessen in Sprang-Capelle on May 4. They sell plush sloths and collect donations, with all proceeds going to the Dutch Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (NCFS). Come visit us too! Your support is great!
It can affect us all. Cystic fibrosis is caused by a genetic error in the CFTR gene. One in 30 people is a carrier of this gene, without even noticing it. But if both parents are carriers, a child has a 25% chance of inheriting the disease. A diagnosis of cystic fibrosis after the heel prick turns life upside down. The carefree time gives way to serious worries and hospital visits. It means a life with a hereditary and incurable disease and a limited life expectancy. Uncertainty prevails, with more questions than answers. Fortunately, there is the NCFS, which has been fighting for a better life and a fairer lifespan for the 1750 people with CF and their loved ones for more than 55 years. We are making progress step by step, but there is still a long way to go.
Gerrie and Ger are not discouraged. As combative grandparents, they both believe in a hopeful future for people with CF. Scientific research is crucial for understanding the disease and developing new treatments. However, the NCFS has limited revenues and cannot spend money on expensive advertising campaigns to recruit donors. That’s why Gerrie and Ger are selling plush sloths from the NCFS for only € 9.50 on May 4. These sweet, soft cuddly toys are suitable for all ages and can be cleaned in the washing machine.
