Samsung has discontinued support for five smartphones and tablets. Users of the affected devices should consider purchasing new ones.

Samsung has ended update support for some of its older smartphones and tablets. This includes the popular Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Tab S7, as the company explains on its website. Users of these devices will no longer receive new Android versions or security updates:

The reason: The five devices still fall under Samsung’s older update policy, which only guaranteed new Android versions and four years of security updates. Since this period has now expired, Samsung has decided to stop supporting them.

Owners of the models mentioned should consider switching to a new device. This is especially true for users who use their devices for online banking or other security-relevant activities. An outdated smartphone or tablet without the latest security updates always poses a risk.

Like other manufacturers, Samsung has steadily improved its update policy in recent years. For example, with the Galaxy S24 series, buyers receive Android and security updates for seven years, allowing them to stay up to date until 2031.

In the past, the company has repeatedly made exceptions to its update policy when it came to critical security vulnerabilities. Updates were sometimes provided for older devices even though official support for them had already expired. However, this is not guaranteed and is not intended to provide any security.
