Public opinion in the United States in favor of a TikTok ban appears to be weakening.

According to foreign news outlets on the 10th, the polling agency Pew Research conducted a survey on Americans’ opinions on the TikTok ban from July 15 to August 4 and released the results on the 5th.

Compared to a year ago, public opinion in favor of a TikTok ban has dropped significantly, while opposition has increased.

The percentage of respondents who said they were in favor of banning TikTok reached 50% in March last year, but fell to 32% in this survey.

Meanwhile, the percentage of respondents who responded that they were ‘opposed’ to the TikTok ban during the same period increased from 22% to 28%.

Also, the response ‘I don’t know’ rose from 28% in March last year to 39% in this survey, taking up the highest response rate.

Support for a TikTok ban has weakened among both Republican and Democratic voters.

Among Republicans, support fell from 60% to 42%. Among Democrats, it fell from 43% to 24%.

TikTok’s fate in the United States is currently uncertain. The U.S. Congress passed the so-called “TikTok Ban Act” in April, and U.S. President Joe Biden signed the bill. The gist of the bill is that if parent company ByteDance does not sell TikTok’s U.S. assets by January 19 next year, the service will be banned.

However, ByteDance fought back and asked the court to overturn the TikTok ban in June.

For a while, the US political world, regardless of the ruling or opposition party, has been bashing TikTok. But now, the mood has completely changed. Both the Democratic and Republican presidential candidates are actively campaigning on TikTok using short-form videos. In particular, former US President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, said, “I will protect TikTok.”
