Colombo: The Supreme Court yesterday ordered former President Gotabaya Rajapakse to appear in person and send a ‘notice’ in the mysterious case of two human rights activists from Jaffna in 2011.

When the war between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE ended in 2009, Mahinda Rajapakse was in office as the country’s president. His brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa was the Defense Secretary.

After the end of the Sri Lankan war, journalists and social activists from Jaffna disappeared one after another; They never came back.

Human rights activists Lalith Weeraraj and Gugan Muruganandan went missing in 2011. It was then alleged that Gotabaya Rajapaksa kidnapped and killed them through the army.

In 2018, the Jaffna court ordered Gothapaya to appear before the court regarding this matter. Gotabaya avoided appearing in person as he said his life was threatened in Jaffna.

After this, he became the President of Sri Lanka in 2018. After this, it was not possible to take him to the court and investigate him.

Now that he has lost his position, the Supreme Court ordered yesterday to send a ‘notice’ to appear in person on Dec. 15 in connection with this case.
