Delhi: Supreme Court Chief Justice NV Ramana strongly criticized the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The Chief Justice asked if even those who read newspapers are a problem for the NIA. The court’s verbal reference is related to the UAPA case in Jharkhand.

Jharkhand High Court granted bail to Sanjay Jain in the case. The NIA approached the Supreme Court against this. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ramana dismissed the petition filed by the NIA. Jain was taken into custody by the NIA in 2018 for alleged links with Maoist organisations.

Jain was arrested and charged with alleged involvement in extorting money by the Tritya Prastuti Committee, a Maoist wing of Jharkhand. A case was registered against Jain under the UAPA Act. But the Jharkhand High Court had doubted the validity of the UAPA on the grounds that he had visited the leader of a banned Maoist outfit and paid money or levies. Later, the High Court granted bail to Jain in 2021 in this case.
