jpnn.comSURABAYA – The Surabaya City General Election Commission (KPU) is targeting 65 percent of registered voters to cast their votes in the upcoming regional elections.

In order to achieve this target, election organizers are stepping up outreach activities to the community.

Reflecting on four consecutive periods, namely starting from the 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2024 Pilkada, the level of public participation was only 54 percent of the Permanent Voters List (DPT).

Surabaya City KPU Chairman Soeprayitno explained that this number was lower than in the General Election which reached 75 percent.

“Our challenges are quite heavy, faced with our records related to voter participation figures where starting from the 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020 Pilkada yesterday the achievement was a maximum of 54 percent. There is a far disparity compared to the Election participation which is always close to 75 percent,” said Nano, Sunday (28/7).

He assessed that the low voter turnout in the regional elections compared to the general elections was because the presidential, vice presidential and legislative elections had more appeal or magnetism for the people so that the majority used their right to vote.

Therefore, to increase participation, his party will conduct massive outreach to the public to exercise their voting rights in November 2024.

“In order to increase the achievement figures (of the Pilkada) to be higher, we are massively conducting socialization, and when the voting day is closed, we appeal to you not to forget to use your right to vote,” he explained again.

The Surabaya KPU targets voter participation in the 2024 Pilkada to reach 65 percent, one of which is through massive socialization.
