Surgeons performed a unique operation on a patient with a genetic disease

Specialists of the Meshalkin Center rescued a 44-year-old patient with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and congenital anomaly of the coronary arteries.

A former military man, a resident of Vladivostok, for a long time complained of severe shortness of breath, fatigue, palpitations. After examination, doctors diagnosed him with a genetic myocardial disease – hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy.

– The pathology is characterized by excessive growth of the heart muscle of the left ventricular outlet of the heart, which creates an obstacle to blood flow, – said Daria Semenyuta, representative of the National Medical Research Center named after Academician Meshalkin, to RG. – Without timely surgical treatment, the disease can lead to sudden death.

The Vladivostok resident was sent to Moscow for an operation. Moscow surgeons performed a standard myoectomy for the patient – they excised the upper third of the thickened interventricular septum. However, after the operation it did not become easier: doctors discovered that the patient had a concomitant heart rhythm disorder – atrial fibrillation. And also a congenital anomaly of the coronary artery – an extended muscle bridge, which provoked symptoms of angina pectoris.

Specialists of the Meshalkin Center, who have extensive experience in the surgical treatment of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, suggested a complex surgical intervention for the patient with simultaneous treatment of concomitant diseases. This operation was the first in domestic medical practice and was successful.

The patient returned to his native Vladivostok and is already planning to go to work in the near future

“The surgeons performed an operation aimed at reducing the thickness of the hypertrophied interventricular septum and correcting the abnormal development of coronary arteries, as well as surgical treatment of concomitant atrial fibrillation,” commented Alexander Bogachev-Prokofiev, director of the Institute of Circulatory Pathology at the National Medical Research Center.

The patient’s shortness of breath and pain are gone. The heartbeat has completely returned to normal. The man returned to his native Vladivostok and is already planning to go to work in the near future. And next summer – go camping with friends.
