Actor Jang Keun-suk revealed that he was battling thyroid cancer. He said that he is currently recovering after undergoing surgery.
On the 16th, Jang Keun Suk uploaded a video titled ‘Hello, I’m Jang Keun Suk. I have something to confess’ on his YouTube channel ‘I am Jang Keun Suk’, revealing the news of his past diagnosis of esophageal cancer and his current status.
Jang Keun-suk said that it has been two weeks since he had surgery for squamous cell carcinoma. He said, “I was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma a year ago,” and “I wonder if people would be surprised if they knew.” In response, a man who appeared to be a production staff member said, “Because you didn’t show it.”
Jang Keun-suk said, “I couldn’t bring myself to tell you because I thought many people would be worried,” and added, “Fortunately, the surgery went well.” He said that he had a hard time for eight days after the surgery, to the point where he couldn’t do anything. Fortunately, two weeks after the surgery, the hospital judged that his progress was good.
Jang Keun-suk announced his trip to Jeju Island, saying, “I’ve regained my health and am now going on a trip.” In the trailer, he joked, “I’m getting more customers. They recognize me. I guess I’m popular in Jeju?”
Thyroid cancer is discovered by chance during health checkups, as more than 95% of patients have no symptoms. If the cancer has progressed to a certain extent, a lump may be felt in the neck. Also, the tumor may invade the vocal cord nerves, causing a change in voice, and as the tumor grows, it may cause difficulty swallowing or shortness of breath.
The most basic treatment for thyroid cancer is surgery, and most patients have a good prognosis, but the recurrence rate is relatively high, so follow-up observation is important.
Jang Keun-suk was diagnosed with thyroid cancer around October of last year and reportedly underwent surgery in May. He established himself as a Hallyu star through “You’re Beautiful” and “Beethoven Virus,” and recently appeared on the Netflix entertainment program “The Influencer.”
